Update - Save Our Street Signs

One of the cast iron signs

Last year we announced an HWA campaign to save our characterful street name signs. We argued that they are a defining part of our village’s history and identity. We believed they should be restored with a lick of paint and stand proud for the future instead of being removed and replaced by unpleasant modern steel printed signs.

We later took expert advice on how to restore the signs and changed tack. We discovered that professional restoration is essential to preserve them for the future.

Then we undertook a thorough audit of all our signs along with the era to which they belong. All 95 street signs in Hampton Wick can be viewed here. We aim to restore 10 of the very old cast iron signs and 5 of the signs from the Borough of Twickenham era.

We have researched and now identified someone with the relevant experience who can professionally restore them.

We are ready to move ahead as follows:

1. Gain support from LBRuT – our local councillors and the council officers who can help make this happen
2. Agree programme for safe removal of identified signs, temporary signage and replacement of renovated signs.
3. Agree funding. It would obviously be good if the council were willing to fund the renovation, especially as we believe the costs to be reasonable, but if not we are willing to seek private funding. We will however need council cooperation in removing/replacing the signs and the placement of temporary signs.
4. Some of these older signs are on private property (sides of buildings etc) and we will of course need to seek approval as and where necessary.

If you’d like to get involved in any way, please let us know.
