March Street Name Signs Update

March 2018

We are now ready to progress with this project.

Of the 95 street signs in Hampton Wick we have identified 10 of the very old cast iron signs and five of the signs from the Borough of Twickenham era which we think are worthy of both restoration and preservation.

We have identified a specialist restorer of old street furniture who has carried out work for councils elsewhere in England. We think his costs (approx £50 per sign) are very reasonable.

After the local elections in May our chairman will be writing to the Hampton Wick councillors asking for their commitment to gain council support for this programme of works. Even if the council cannot help financially we will need their help in physically removing the signs and then replacing them after they have been restored and we don’t want the project to get bogged down in official paperwork.

Do you know?

In the meantime, here’s a test of your local knowledge: how many Lower Teddington Road street name signs are there? Check your answer here: Street Name Sign Gallery – the streets are in alphabetical order!
