Pedestrian crossing replacement outside station - ongoing delays and disruption

We’ve had many questions about the length of the works to replace and upgrade the crossing outside the station. It seems to have been going on for weeks and weeks for what might seem like a routine job.

We are aware of inconvenience to pedestrians and motorists alike.Traffic has been seen backed up into Kingston one-way system. The temporary lights have also been known to break down at night resulting in a dangererous situation on our High Street.

We’ve written to councillors in an attempt to find out exactly what is going on. Cllr Jim Millard has kindly taken up the batton for us and has discovered that the delays have been caused by TfL and not by our own council. However, we’ve been promised that it will all be finished by ‘the end of this week” – Friday 13th March.

Please see below the full text of Cllr Millard’s helpful response from the council officer:

We were hoping that the works would have been finished by now. However we are dependent on Transport for London’s contractor removing the old equipment and installing the new crossing. Unfortunately they have let us down on multiple occasions and made our progression much slower than we would have liked.

Our contractor will have all of their works finished by the end of this week. We are ready for the new crossing to be installed and have been chasing TfL to have their contractor come out asap so that works can be finished off.
