The Churches in Hampton Wick and Teddington are once again organising a lunch in Elleray Hall, Teddington on Christmas Day (11am – 3:30pm) for the elderly and others who might otherwise be alone that day. If you, or someone you know, might appreciate attending the lunch, please put them in touch with Colin and Elizabeth Hicks (contact details below). The lunch will be accompanied by entertainment, mince pies and other refreshments.
Volunteers are also needed to give people lifts to and from the lunch, to help with the preparations and to serve the food. Many of the volunteer tasks can be fitted around a family Christmas. This could be all the more enjoyable for having helped to give some folk, who might otherwise be alone, a truly happy Christmas. The Hampton Fuel Allotment Charity is generously supporting the lunch but additional donations are also welcome both of money but also of small gifts for the guests at the lunch.
To register attendance, or to offer help, contact: Colin and Elizabeth Hicks: tel 020 8977 8000 or email: office@teddingtonbaptist.org.uk
Notes:
We can take a maximum of 80 guests drawn from Teddington, Twickenham and the Hamptons with the occasional interloper from further afield (e.g. Richmond). The guests do not have to attend or be nominated by a church – anyone is welcome.
All the Hampton Wick and Teddington churches take part with a rotating lead church, this year it is Teddington Baptist Church. (Hampton Wick Baptist Church is part of the Kingston Churches Together group.)

Don’t miss this world-famous annual event in Bushy Park!
Since Victorian times, thousands of people have come to Bushy Park – traditionally on the Sunday closest to 11th May – to celebrate the chestnut blossoms when they are at their finest. This year the date has moved slightly to Sunday 6th May which isn’t quite the closest to the 11th.
The famous Chestnut Sunday parade leaves Teddington Gate in Bushy Park at 12 noon and proceeds down Chestnut Avenue to Diana Fountain. There’s a children’s funfair plus lots of local community group stalls.
Do come to this famous annual local celebration. Why not bring a picnic? And don’t forget to come and say hello to us at the HWA stall.

This is an important part of the Village Planning process, during which we can have our say about the future of Hampton Wick. Residents will be given the opportunity to quiz the Leader and Cabinet Members about their priorities for our local area.
The event will include an update on Village Planning in each area and provide an opportunity for residents to hear about future collaboration opportunities with the Council and other local organisations.
Despite the HWA’s request that the council treat Hampton Wick as separate from Teddington, we are again being lumped together for this event. This makes it even more important that as many Hampton Wick residents attend as possible to ensure that our views, ideas and concerns are heard alongside those of our friends and neighbours in Teddington.

Puccini’s masterpiece La Boheme is justifiably one of the world’s most enduringly popular operas with memorable tunes telling stories of love and romance in the Parisian art world. This is the sweet but tragic tale of the pretty flower girl Mimi with her beloved poet Rodolfo and also of the whimsical and charming Musetta with the painter Marcello.
Villa in Canto have been performing at Normansfield Theatre for the past few years. Well-known operatic masterpieces have been elegantly reworked into touching slices of the original, performed by successful, professional singers in carefully selected dramatic costumes and accompanied by a pianoforte. The expert musical direction is the work of Riccardo Serenelli who manages to maintain all of the integrity and grandeur of the original plots. He fills the operas with emotional energy and captures the audience for the entire performance.
Tickets: £20 and £16 by calling 0333 1212 300 or book online.

This concert is organised by Teddington Summer Music as a fundraiser for their 3 concerts arranged in June at Normansfield Theatre.

Villa Incanto, a visiting Italian Opera Company, performed La Boheme to a sold-out audience on 25th February at Normansfiedl Theatre. They are returning on 5th May 2018 to perform La Traviata.
La Traviata (the fallen woman) tells the moving story of how a beautiful but doomed courtesan, Violetta, in the Paris of 1850, finds true love but then has to sacrifice her real happiness for the sake of her lover’s reputation. This intimate opera was considered very risqué at the time but, through its instantly recognizable arias and the tense emotionality of the music, has continued to be one of the most frequently performed operas through to today.

The Teddington Society invite everyone to join them at the Beaumont Room at The Lensbury, on Monday 21st May at 7.30pm, when John Tough, seventh generation of the Teddington family of boatbuilders, will give a talk entitled Tough’s Boatyard and the Little Ships.

John’s grandfather, Douglas, was responsible for gathering together more than 100 small craft to take part in the evacuation of British, French and Belgian troops trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940. Later called ‘The Miracle of Dunkirk’, some 300,000 troops were ferried out by little ships to the larger Navy vessels and brought home to safety. John will describe the history of his unique family and their extraordinary contribution to life in Teddington.
The evening is open to all. Tickets cost £5 and include a complimentary glass of wine. Apply to the Teddington Society Treasurer at email sally.howland@btinternet.com or telephone 020 8977 9404.

Alison Merrington’s research into the names on our war memorial and life in Hampton Wick generally during WW1 bring us to the long-awaited armistice of 1918. At last the machine guns fell silent over the trenches. Alison will be describing what this meant for the men of Hampton Wick who were out there on the front line and to their families back home.
Her talk will also describe what was going on here in the local area at that time. With riots and revolution in the air it seems things were far from peaceful in Hampton Wick.

Richmond Council is inviting residents to take part in the borough’s Community Conversation event focused on Community Safety for Teddington, Hampton Wick, Fulwell & Hampton Hill residents on the 4th of November at 6.30pm.
Normally the Community Conversation ward events are held in person. However, due to the impact of Covid-19, the Council has had to move the event online.
The Community Conversation is an opportunity for residents to let their ward representatives and Police know what issues are important to them through this uncertain time and to share their ideas about the future of their local area.
Those who wish to attend must pre-register for the event. Once registered they will be sent a link and will be able to log in and hear from local ward councillors live.
Once logged in, attendees will be invited to have their say via video or text chat on local issues including Community Safety in Teddington, Hampton Wick, Fulwell & Hampton Hill. The event be joined on the night by a member of the local Police force who will answer any Community Safety questions residents may have.

We are sad to have to report that the Government’s restrictions relating to COVID mean that Remembrance Sunday will have to be honoured differently this year, and Hampton Wick is no exception.
The Remembrance Day Procession along the High Street and the services at the Memorial Garden and in the church have been cancelled. However, the church service will go ahead online, starting at 10.45am. It will be live-streamed here https://stjohnshamptonwick.online.church/.
The church will also be relaying an image from the War Memorial during the service so if you plan to lay a wreath, either individually or on behalf of an organisation, it would be good if you could do so in advance (on Saturday or early Sunday) so that it is included in that relayed image. The HWA will provide a place for wooden crosses of remembrance.
As we all remember and honour those who have served and those who continue to serve in the armed forces, please take some time to visit www.hwremembers.org.uk to learn more about the WW1 servicemen who are listed on the Hampton Wick Memorial.

[The following is an extract from an open letter by Matt Davies of HWRCC. For full text, see link below]
A watershed moment
Autumn 2021 has been a watershed moment for the game of cricket in England. The game is going through a
root and branch review in its approach to racism, and The Wick [HWRCC] is not exempt from this self-reflection.
Irrespective of how well we may think we are doing; the Wick [HWRCC] must do better and we must become anti-racist.
An Open Conversation
We believe that our most important focus (of many) should be on education. Therefore, please join us for an
open conversation about anti-racism at The Wick [HWRCC].
We are grateful to club members who have agreed to talk
honestly about their own experience of racism in our sport and society. We are also pleased to welcome a
number of external voices to the conversation, with representation from the Mayor of London, Richmond
Council, Surrey CCC, ECB and local perspectives from schools, fellow sports clubs and charities.
The event will be in person (subject to Covid restrictions, and bound by Covid rules), and available to watch
online, but will not be recorded. Racism is an issue for everyone involved with the club, so everyone is invited.
However, we want an open discussion, so it is parental discretion if they are happy for their children to take
part. Note it is the intention to run a similar session for the junior section later in 2022, suitably planned and
framed.
To confirm your attendance and help us plan for the night please follow this link.

The 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings is being commemorated this year. This event is acknowledged as a significant turning point in the outcome of the Second World War.
Bushy Park played a unique role at this time, being the base for the Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF). The park had already become home to American troops of the USAAF who established Camp Griffiss there in 1942.
By the end of 1943 plans were being drawn up for the invasion of France, with American General Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed as Supreme Commander and tasked with delivering the scheme.
In March 1944 SHAEF moved into the park to finalise the arrangements for D-Day which took place on 6 June 1944. This signified the beginning of the end of the occupation of north-western Europe during the Second World War.
On Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June 2024, between 11am and 3pm, the Friends of Bushy and Home Parks will be marking this anniversary with an exhibition near SHAEF Gate (Sandy Lane, Teddington) and guided walks around the site of USAAF Camp Griffiss.

The Skiff Club invites you to enjoy learning to row in traditional boats from their club in Trowlock Way, Teddington.
Skiffs are stable, making basic skills easy to learn, leading to good exercise and opportunities to race in local events on the Thames under the Skiff Racing Association.
Regular club activities include rowing outings throughout the week and at weekends (often including a pub or cafe stop) in addition to an ongoing coaching and training program. The friendly bar is open on Thursdays for well-earned refreshment.
For the more adventurous the Skiff Club organises expeditions to other waterways in the UK and abroad. This year’s tours include 4 days on the River Wey, 2 days to Chertsey and back, skiffing at the Vogalonga festival in Venice and a 3 day row upstream for Henley Regatta.
Beginners courses start on Saturday 3 May and will run weekly for 4 lessons. Each lesson will last 1.5 hours and the whole course costs just £60. The club also offers trial outings if the full beginners course doesn’t suit. Its a great way to enjoy the river, learn a skill, get some exercise and meet new friends.

The HWA is pleased to present a FREE exhibition at Hampton Wick Library: LIFE STORIES
Local charity, the Teddington & Hampton Wick Voluntary Care Group local charity (TedCare) has collected the life stories of some of the longest living residents in our community. These recollections of living and working in Teddington and Hampton Wick from the 1930s to the present day create a fascinating picture of how our communities have changed in that time.
The HWA has collaborated with TedCare to publish a booklet, “Life Stories”, which will be distributed locally to raise awareness for the charity. We have also created an exhibition featuring highlights from the life stories. The exhibition was displayed at the event to launch the book on 25th September – click here to see photos.
The exhibition will be at Hampton Wick Library from 26th September to 5th November. You can also pick up a free copy of the booklet.
Hampton Wick Library (Bennet CLose, KT1 4AT) is open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
